Living on SFTR: Nextdoor Neighborhoods

When a ranch owner joins Nextdoor, they are assigned to the Santa Fe Trail Ranch neighborhood. What they may not realize is Nextdoor automatically connects our neighborhood with other neighborhoods that are closest to us geographically. Nextdoor will also automatically connect our neighborhood with other new nearby neighborhoods as they are created.
Nextdoor has the concept of “nearby neighborhoods”. Currently there is only one nearby neighborhood, “Southern Part of Trinidad”, as shown to the right. There are other neighborhoods in and around Trinidad as well.
Depending on how your account is configured, any time you post something on Nextdoor, the information you post might be seen by members of other neighborhoods around us. In addition, if a post is shared with neighborhoods beyond Santa Fe Trail Ranch, all comments related to that post will also be seen in those additional neighborhoods.
Some communications about the ranch (e.g., security weaknesses, private events, pictures of your home/property, contact information, lost & found items etc.) should probably only be shared with ranch residents. Depending on your settings and the way you post content, this information may be seen by people you did not intend.
The Communications Committee strongly requests that each resident check their settings to ensure our ranch information and your personal information is protected.
How do I determine where things have been posted?
- On any given post, a phrase like the ones below appears at the bottom of the post.
Posted in General to Santa Fe Trail Ranch
Posted in General to 2 neighborhoods
Posted in General to Anyone - If you see "Santa Fe Trail Ranch" shown, only residents of the ranch can see the posting.
- If you see "2 neighborhoods" and click on it, a map appears showing you which neighborhoods will see the post.
[NOTE: The map is only available on the web version of Nextdoor.] - If you see "Anyone" and click on it, a map appears showing all neighborhoods that will see the post. In this scenario, six additional neighborhoods in and around Trinidad have been added.
[NOTE: The map is only available on the web version of Nextdoor.]
How do I change my settings?
Please note the changes you make to your account on any device applies to all devices. Therefore you only need to make the changes in one place.
Restrict Neighborhoods
The nearby neighborhoods that can see your postings can be configured as follows:
On the Web [at this writing, this does not work]
- Tap the profile icon in the top right corner on Nextdoor.
- Select "Settings".
- Select "Nearby Neighborhoods".
- Select "Personalize your list of nearby neighborhoods".
- Turn off all neighborhoods listed. [Currently no neighborhoods are listed for selection/deselection.]
On an iPhone
- Open the Nextdoor app.
- Tap “… More” in the lower right corner.
- Scroll down and select “Settings”.
- Select “Nearby Neighborhoods”.
- Turn off all neighborhoods listed.
On an Android device
- Open the Nextdoor app.
- Tap “… More” in the lower right corner.
- Scroll down and select “Settings”.
- Select “Nearby Neighborhoods”.
- Uncheck all neighborhoods listed.
Set Privacy
In addition to restricting your neighborhoods, it is important to make sure your privacy settings are also set correctly.
- Return to “Settings”.
- Select “Privacy”.
- The preferred setting for “Show my recommendations to:” is shown below. Please do not use “Anyone on Nextdoor” as your default.
- If you have nearby neighborhoods configured, the option “Neighbors …” would change the reflect the number of nearby neighborhoods you have configured. You do not have control at this point to exclude them. That is why it is recommended they be removed from your settings (described above).
- Even if you restrict this default privacy setting, on any given post, “Anyone” can still be selected while you are creating the post. Please be aware that “Anyone” does not mean anyone on the ranch, it means anyone in any neighborhood in and around the Trinidad area. Please use that option with great care in considering what information you are sharing.
