A.R. Mitchell Museum of Western Art Back to top
The A.R. Mitchell Museum of Western Art opened in Trinidad in 1981 and in 1989 the museum purchased the historic Jamieson Dry Goods Store, a 1906 Western-style structure with original pressed-tin ceilings, wood floors and a horseshoe-shaped mezzanine, which became the permanent home of the museum. The “Mitch” has become an important venue for art, culture, history and tourism in southeastern Colorado. As a “native son,” Mitchell, and the museum named after him, are fiercely protected and honored by the community.
The primary work displayed is by Arthur Roy Mitchell, illustrator and artist, who created over 160 Western pulp magazine covers during the 1920s through 1940s. More than 350 paintings and illustrations by Mitchell and his contemporaries comprise the museum's main collection. The museum is also home to a collection of early Hispanic traditional and religious art, including bultos, retablos, tinwork, and Penitente artifacts. Native American pottery, blankets, rugs, clothing and artifacts collected by Mitchell are also on display. Historic photographs taken by Oliver E. Aultman, Benjamin Wittick, and Almerod Newman from the late 1800s through much of the 20th century are also on display when space allows.

Art Cartopia Museum Back to top
Art Cartopia Museum is a new roadside attraction celebrating the wondrous world of art cars. There are 25+ of these wildly creative and drivable vehicles on display along with the coolest gift shop ever, art gallery and makerspace.
The list of "things to do and see" at Art Cartopia Museum is long and ever-changing, but museum visits will definitely feature our collection of over 25 art cars on display, a tour by one of our 'Splainers', browsing in our gift shop, and possible participation in an art car build or Makerspace/hands-on activities, depending on what's going on. Trust us (it's mostly safe), you will be in "mouth-agape awe" and the fun-loving 10 year-old inside will smile until it hurts! Come see, play, and have fun!
Baca House Back to top
The Baca House and Outbuilding was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
The Baca House is part of the Trinidad History Museum, which features the historic Bloom Mansion and Baca House, two residences built in the late 19th century, as well as heritage gardens and the Santa Fe Trail museum, all on one block in Trinidad's acclaimed historic district.
It is a two-story adobe house having 10 rooms, which was home of rancher and businessman Felipe Baca. An adobe outbuilding includes 12 rooms, arranged in a 160 feet (49 m) long building, which housed ranch hands and visitors.The house was originally built for "Santa Fe Trail entrepreneur" John Hough. Felipe and Dolores Baca purchased it for 22,000 pounds of wool. It was built in 1869 or 1870.
The property is on the 300 block of Main St. in Trinidad. The Bloom Mansion is adjacent.
Bear Lake & Blue Lake Back to top
These two small lakes near Cuchara make a wonderful destination for a day outing or a nearby camping trip. Both lakes offer opportunities for camping, hiking and fishing with a trail that connects the two.
The road to these lakes is accessed from highway 12 just south of Cuchara. The first lake encountered is Blue Lake followed by a short drive to Bear Lake. This road is a great place to view the aspens in the fall.
Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site Back to top
Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site features a reconstructed 1840s adobe fur trading post on the mountain branch of the Santa Fe Trail where traders, trappers, travelers, and the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes came together in peaceful terms for trade. Today, living historians recreate the sights, sounds, and smells of the past with guided tours, demonstrations and special events.
The Frank G. Bloom House or Bloom Mansion was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
The Bloom Mansion is part of the Trinidad History Museum, which features the historic Bloom Mansion and Baca House, two residences built in the late 19th century, as well as heritage gardens and the Santa Fe Trail museum, all on one block in Trinidad's acclaimed historic district.
It is a late 19th-century building meant to serve as the personal residence of its owner. Cattle baron and banker Frank Bloom and his wife, Sarah, had the mansion built in 1882. The building is constructed in a French style and used locally made bricks. The home is still decorated with an array of period furnishings including a horn chair and delicate porcelain figures.
The property is on the 300 block of Main St. in Trinidad. The Baca House is adjacent.
Bosque Del Oso State Wildlife Area Back to top
Covering 30,000 acres of Las Animas County, the Bosque Del Oso State Wildlife Area is a scenic and secluded outdoor destination west of Weston, Colorado. To enter or stay in the Bosque del Oso SWA, a valid state fishing or hunting license is required for visitors over eighteen. Beyond this, there are no day or overnight fees for use of the land.
Bosque del Oso translates from Spanish to “Forest of the Bear,” or “Bear Forest.” It became the largest designated hunting land in Colorado when it was established in 1998. The SWA is bordered by private land and offers breathtaking views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Trinidad, CO, and Raton Pass.
Part of the 8,000 square mile Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field, Capulin Volcano National Monument showcases the volcanic geology of northeastern New Mexico. The views are spectacular day or night, with views of 4 different states from the volcanic rim and one of the darkest night skies in the country.
Whether it's a quick stop or a day's trip, enjoy exploring the landscape of this unique volcano!
The Cimino Downtown Park is located on Modica Drive in Trinidad. In addition to the playground and picnic areas, the park has a water fountain for kids to play in each summer as well as two bocce ball courts.
The park sits on the Riverwalk and is home to the Farmers Market each fall.

Cuchara is a charming, mountain village tucked on the eastern slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the heart of the Cucharas River Valley.
Surrounded by the San Isabel National Forest with all its lakes, mountains, and wilderness, this village is a favorite respite for Colorado hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts. At the heart of Cuchara is a quaint downtown area with colorful shops, lodging, and restaurants.
Cuchara offers wonderful views of dramatic West Spanish Peak, one of two geological towers once used as guideposts for traveling American Indians and pioneers.
South of town along Colorado 12, part of the scenic Highway of Legends, are gorgeous views topping out at the 9,995-foot Cucharas Pass. Nearby are abundant opportunities for hiking, fishing, OHVing, and camping, especially at Cordova Pass, Cuchara Recreation Area, and Bear and Blue Lakes.
Cuchara Mountain Park Back to top
Opening in 1981 as Panadero ski area, The Parker-Fitzgerald Cuchara Mountain Park was purchased by Huerfano County in 2017 using funds raised by the Cuchara Foundation. The park is roughly 50 acres, mostly at the base of the old ski resort. Volunteers have rehabbed the former ski rental office into a day lodge that is open selected weekends and holidays to visitors.
Although the old ski area has been closed since 2000 … 50+ acres of the old base area now makes up the the Cuchara Mountain Park. This now gives access to the rest of the mountain which is part of the San Isabel National Forest … opening up access to human powered skiing and other recreational opportunities.
Trinidad is home to 143 original buildings dating as far back as the late 1800s that reflect historic architecture and provide great shopping opportunities for visitors and residents alike. These unique shopping venues lend such a charming vibe to Trinidad. Earth Mountain Education Farm Back to top
Earth Mountain Education Farm is a 440 acre environmental education center nestled in the captivating canyons of the Sangre de Cristo Range and the beautiful Wahatoya Mountains, at an elevation of 8,500 feet. These canyons are ideal for exploring and learning about the diverse flora and fauna that are abundant here. Earth Mountain's 40 acre base camp integrates a working organic farm, renewable energy systems, and fun camp facilities to offer a wealth of learning opportunities. The surrounding acres present endless hiking opportunities.
Fisher's Peak State Park Back to top
Fishers Peak State Park is one of the newest state park in Colorado, having opened in October 2020. Open daily from sunrise to sunset, this 19,200-acre park currently allows visitors on 250 acres of the land. The mixture of grasslands, mountains, and foothills, as well as wildlife including mountain lions, bears, and bobcats here, fascinates park visitors of all ages.
While construction and development have not been completed, the goals of conservation and sustainability will be carried at Fishers Peak moving forward. As more time passes, more of the park will continue to expand, providing visitors with even more opportunities to explore and enjoy the area’s vast expanse of natural beauty.
Folsom, NM has a population of about 77. The Folsom area is one of the most beautiful and interesting in Northern New Mexico.
The village is located in a valley by the Dry Cimarron River. Capulin Volcano, an extinct volcano and national park, is about 7 miles to the southwest.
The Folsom Museum was established in 1966 and has occupied the Doherty Mercantile building ever since.
The Folsom area is home to the Folsom Man Archaeological site. This find changed our thinking about man's early presence on the continent.
You are invited to experience the area’s gravel road opportunities. Trinidad is part of Las Animas County, the largest county in Colorado, consisting of 4,775 square miles with 1600+ miles of gravel roads.
These roads take in the expanse of the eastern plains and the western mountains for the enjoyment of area citizens and visiting cyclists.

Great Sand Dunes National Park Back to top
A sandbox of epic proportions, the entire dune field encompasses 30 square miles and the tallest dune towers 750 feet high. The kid in every visitor loves to sled down the sand year-round and plunge into the soft-sand tracks of those who climbed ahead of them. Aside from the dunes, you'll find picnicking, hiking and camping opportunities, the challenging four-wheel scenic drive on Medano Pass, horseback-riding trails, the mysteriously appearing and disappearing Medano Creek, ranger-led nature walks and a couple of 14,000- and 13,000-foot peaks to climb (Crestone Needle, Crestone Peak, Cleveland Peak and Mount Herard).
The park's elevation (8,200 feet) and rural location make it a favorite with dark-sky-loving stargazers, and it even offers special astronomy programs many evenings May–September. The Junior Ranger program has different activities for kids ages 3–12, and they earn a badge once they've completed the educational and fun tasks.
Highway of Legends Scenic & Historic Byway Back to top
State Highway 12, the Scenic Highway of Legends, ties Walsenburg, La Veta, Cuchara, Stonewall, Trinidad, and Aguilar together with a ribbon of asphalt that journeys through some of the nation’s most beautiful national forests, state parks, wildlife areas, and mountain ranges.
Highway 12 was designated a National Forest Byway in 1988 and a Colorado State Byway in 1989. In February 2021, The Highway of Legends Scenic Byway was added to the National Scenic Byway System, which recognized the byway for its outstanding scenic and historic attributes. The Scenic Highway of Legends starts at the cities of Trinidad, Aguilar, and Walsenburg and circles the Spanish Peaks.
The Byway is home to unique geological, cultural, and historic features and includes a myriad of legends from the Native Americans, the Spanish Conquistadors, and the pioneers, miners, trappers, and ranchers who explored and then settled this region.
Kit Carson Park is located at the corner of Kansas Ave and San Pedro. The 5.7 acre park has a playground, picnic tables and a historic bandstand. The park is home a statue honoring Kit Carson and a marker designating it as part of the original Santa Fe Trail.

This small, laid-back town at the base of the majestic Spanish Peaks is located along the Scenic Highway of Legends. La Veta, the vein, served as a vital lifeline a century ago; the town was originally a busy trading center, supplying the nearby area with goods. It is now home to a diverse population of artists and ranchers.
Lathrop State Park Back to top
The park’s two lakes offer a variety of boating and angling opportunities for all types of water recreation. Martin Lake offers water skiing, power and sail boating. Because Martin is a warm-water lake, it makes it great for swimmers. Horseshoe Lake is a peaceful haven for canoeists, kayakers, sailors and other boaters at wakeless speeds. Catfish, bass, walleye, trout and blue gill thrive in both lakes. Horseshoe Lake is known for its large tiger muskies.
The park also offers camping, hike and bike trails, and golfing.
Louden-Henritze Archaeology Museum Back to top

Ludlow Massacre Memorial Back to top
This monument marks the site of the Ludlow Massacre. The Massacre occurred on April 20, 1914 when the Colorado National Guard attacked and later burned a tent community of striking coal miners.
Two women and 11 children died of asphyxiation while huddled in a cellar. Five strikers, two other youngsters, and at least four men associated with the militia joined them in death.
An annual ceremony is held at the Monument to commemorate the event.
Main Street LIVE provides year-round, diverse, quality theatrical entertainment and cultural enrichment for Trinidad and surrounding communities, and provides educational performance opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds. North Lake State Wildlife Area Back to top
Between Trinidad and La Veta, Colorado, the North Lake State Wildlife Area is an easily accessible designated wilderness area found along the Highway of Legends (State Highway 12) in Las Animas County. North Lake SWA is bordered by private land and the San Isabel National Forest and is found just north of Monument Lake Park.
In total, the SWA covers 840 acres of protected, scenic territory in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, which ranges from 8,478 to 9,905 feet in elevation. There are many, designated parking areas with posted information in the North Lake SWA, which offers visitors a chance to stop, stretch their legs, and enjoy the remote alpine territory.

These primitive canyons in the Comanche National Grasslands are home to the largest dinosaur track site in North America. Over 1,900 prints in 130 separate track ways extend across a quarter mile of bedrock along the banks of the Purgatoire River.
The canyons also feature prehistoric rock art and ancient ruins.
Located at the base of the Raton Pass, the highest point along the historic Santa Fe Trail, Raton is a small town tucked away in the Rocky Mountains.

Raton Regional Aquatic Center is a state of the art indoor swimming facility. Opened on May 30, 2011 the Raton Regional Aquatic Center features a rock climbing wall, diving board and an enclosed water slide.
The Aquatic Center is operated by the City of Raton Parks & Recreation Department.
San Isabel National Forest Back to top
The San Isabel National Forest is located in central Colorado. The forest contains 19 of the state's 53 fourteeners, peaks over 14,000 feet (4,267 m) high, including Mount Elbert, the highest point in Colorado.
It is one of eleven national forests in the state of Colorado and contains the Sawatch Range, the Collegiate Peaks, and Sangre de Cristo Range. It has a total area of 1,120,233 acres (1,750.36 sq mi, or 4,533.42 km²) spread out over parts of eleven counties in central Colorado. In descending order of land area it is located in Chaffee, Custer, Lake, Huerfano, Fremont, Pueblo, Saguache, Las Animas, Park, Costilla, and Summit counties.[1]
San Isabel National Forest is co-managed by the Forest Service together with Pike National Forest, Cimarron National Grassland, and Comanche National Grassland from offices in Pueblo. There are local ranger district offices located in Cañon City, Leadville, and Salida.
There are seven officially designated wilderness areas lying within San Isabel National Forest that are part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Four of them extend into neighboring National Forests, and of these, one also onto land under management of the National Park Service. Another one extends onto land of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.
Skateland is a roller rink that has been in Trinidad since 1942.
They offer roller skating, lazer tag, serve as home of the Brick City Roller Derby, and during the week they are a non-profit organization called SOCO Clubhouse for kids.

Southern Colorado Coal Mining Memorial Museum Back to top
The museum is a tribute to the dedicated miners who explored the vast caverns beneath the plains, mountains and mesas of Southeastern Colorado. Here you can discover the industry that built Trinidad by riding a coal car, learning about the history and the workers who challenged the Rockefellers. Tour the lower level that takes you underground offering a peek into the mining experience.
Outside the museum is the coal miner's memorial, the canary in a birdcage, and a statue of Louis Tikas (a Greek immigrant who served as the main labor union organizer.
Southside Park Disc Golf Course Back to top
Trinidad is home to the Southside Park disc golf course, which is a challenging course just off of I-25. Grab your disc and stop in for a quick nine, some great views, then stroll through downtown Trinidad where you can admire its assortment of 143 original historic buildings that date back to the 1800’s.

Stonewall is a village located at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. It grew around a large gap in the Dakota Wall from which it takes it's name. The elevation is around 8,000 feet.
As were most towns in the Purgatoire River Valley, it was first populated in the 1860's by Hispanic settlers from the Mora, New Mexico area. One of the first settlers in Stonewall was named James Stoner, and it has been said the Dakota Wall the dominates the landscape was originally known as "Stoner's Wall". It has long been a favored retreat, known for it's quiet, Alpine beauty. The Stonewall Country Club celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2004.
Nestled in the beautiful Purgatoire River Valley at around 6,010 feet in elevation, Trinidad features a large, hilly historic downtown district. It’s one of the most southern Colorado towns on I-25, located thirteen miles north of the New Mexico border.
There’s a lot to see and do around this often-overlooked section of Colorado. Downtown has everything you need in terms of commerce. The picturesque Victorian architecture and red-brick streets are sure to leave a lasting impression.

Trinidad Aquatic Center Back to top
Opened in June 2008, the Aquatic Center includes a wading pool for toddlers, a 140-foot "flume" slide, and a six lane lap pool. You can relax poolside and enjoy a snack from the concession stand. The Aquatic Center is ADA accessible and opens on May 31, weather permitting.
Trinidad Community Center Back to top
The Trinidad Community Center is part of a larger sports complex that includes the Family Aquatic Center, the Trinidad Skate Park and Southside Baseball Park. The complex was dedicated on June 28, 2007, in honor of Trinidad native John Gagliardi, the most succesfull college football coach in history with a career record of 489-138-11. He began his coaching career at the age of 16 when his football coach at Trinidad Catholic High School was drafted in World War II. He continued to coach at Catholic high schools and colleges until his retirement in 2012 and was inducted into the Colorado Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
The Community Center has an indoor basketball court, ping pong tables, a foosball table, a weight room, an aerobics room, and a meeting room.

The Trinidad Community Farmers Market provides a marketplace where fresh and wholesome products are sold.
Products that can be sold at the Market include: vegetables, fruits, berries, nuts, flowers, plants, honey, meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products.
Seventy - five percent of the products sold must be grown, raised produced, or gathered by the vendor in the State of Colorado or in Counties bordering the State.

Trinidad Municipal Golf Course Back to top
Established in 1915, Trinidad Municipal Golf Course is one of the oldest courses in the state and has been recognized as one of “Colorado’s Best Nine Hole Golf Courses” for years. It’s friendly professional staff, picturesque views and immaculately manicured course that makes this the perfect place to experience Southern Colorado golf at its finest. You may even see some of our native wildlife during your round so bring your camera.
Framed by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Fisher’s Peak, this layout will challenge every level of golfer from the casual player to the skilled competitor. Even though there are only 9 holes, there are 4 tee boxes on each hole with a different location and look, so 18 holes is the norm. Don’t be fooled by our “small town charm,” the course offers challenges from elevation changes, perfectly manicured yet tricky greens, bunkers and woodlands.

One of the least known wonders of modern America is within walking distance of downtown in one of the most famous towns on the Santa Fe Trail. This is where your skateboarding teens can come to wear themselves out in total bliss. So while you are busy checking out the museums, the shopping, the fishing, the hiking, etc., the kids can be having a blast in a safe place on their own. Fair warning, though, when you get back home the kids will want one of these... and they'll drive you nuts for it...
Trinidad Triggers Baseball Team Back to top
The Trinidad Triggers are a professional minor league baseball team in the Pecos League of Professional Baseball Clubs. The team was admitted to the League in 2011 and began play in 2012.
The team plays its home games at Trinidad Central Park during the late spring and early summer.
The Trinidad Trolley might be the best way to discover Trinidad, Colorado’s colorful sights and sounds during the summer. This free, 45-minute guided tour of town covers the exciting history of the area and points of interest to those who are new to or visiting Trinidad.
There are various trolley stops along the tour route where you are welcome to get on or off. The trolley tours have been operating for over 35 years. These tours are offered free to the public from Memorial Day, in the last week of May, through Labor Day, in the first week of September.
Vermejo Park Ranch Back to top
Vermejo Park Ranch is a 550,000-acre nature reserve and guest ranch in northeastern New Mexico and southern Colorado. Ted Turner Reserves, the luxury hospitality company founded by Ted Turner includes conservation research and ecosystem restoration along with guest operations. The reserve, which stretches from the Great Plains to the summit of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains produces significant quantities of coalbed methane, a type of natural gas.
A brunch is open to the public twice a year which is coordinated by the City of Raton Department of Parks and Recreation.
Walsenburg Wild Waters Back to top
With three different pools, a lazy river, two giant water slides, and interactive water features including fountains, sprays, and dumping bucket, you’re sure to have a splashin’ good time at Walsenburg Wild Waters!
The water park’s zero-entry pool allows the youngest of water enthusiasts to enter without worrying about the water’s depth. It’s just like walking from the beach into the ocean!
Enjoy a diving board and a 12-foot deep diving well, or glide down giant, 30-foot-high water slides. The green slide is open-topped and the yellow slide is fully enclosed. Both slides offer an exciting, twisting, turning ride with an invigorating splash at the end. Guests under 48 inches tall can play on a ‘seal slide,’ which offers a gentle three-foot ride into the three-foot-deep end of the zero-entry pool.
Kids love the water feature chock-full of water toys like tipping-buckets, water sprays, and other attractions to keep everyone busy.

The NRA Whittington Center in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Colfax County, New Mexico, is one of the largest and most comprehensive shooting facilities in the United States.
Ten percent of the 33,300-acre site has been developed to include twenty-five shooting ranges, an administration building, a cafeteria, a museum, a library, classrooms, and full-service hookups for 175 recreational vehicles. The remainder of the site provides wildlife habitat at elevations above 6,300 feet with primitive campgrounds and remote back-country cabins for hunting, bird watching, wildlife viewing, photography, hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding

The Wormhole Loop Trail is a 2.9 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Trinidad, Colorado that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, nature trips, and mountain biking. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
This is a nice hike for anyone visiting Trinidad offering vistas of Trinidad and the surrounding area.
The name "wormhole" was selected due to the interest rock formations found on the south side of the loop.
