Colorado statistics regarding the causes of wildfires fires from 1992 to 2020
According to the US Forest Service, approximately 60 % of wildfires were caused by human activity, while lightning strikes accounted for the rest. The top human activity responsible for wildfires were:
- Unattended or careless extinguishing of campfires
- Smoking - careless discarding of cigarettes and smoking materials
- Sparks from equipment like motor vehicles, ATVs, and chainsaws.
