An objective approach is always preferable when considering the potential results of a decision. It is always better to prevent a fire, or crime rather than dealing with the consequences of making an emotional and risky decision. Statistics and facts help in this process. This blog is not intended to erupt into an emotional debate. Its sole purpose is to objectively analyze the potential unintended consequences of any actions.

Colorado statistics regarding the causes of wildfires fires from 1992 to 2020


According to the US Forest Service, approximately 60 % of wildfires were caused by human activity, while lightning strikes accounted for the rest. The top human activity responsible for wildfires were:

  • Unattended or careless extinguishing of campfires
  • Smoking - careless discarding of cigarettes and smoking materials
  • Sparks from equipment like motor vehicles, ATVs, and chainsaws.

  • Colorado ranked 2nd in crime against property in the United States
  • Colorado continues to rank 1st in motor vehicle theft in the United States
  • Colorado crimes increased in 7 categories: arson, motor vehicle theft, robbery, vandalism, drug possession & sales, and pandering.
  • Approximately 70% of all major crimes were NOT reported in 2023
